callCall (252) 745-7232A county almost entirely surrounded by water
Pamlico County was cut out of Craven and Beaufort in 1872, and it is about 337 square miles of low peninsula with the Neuse River on one side, the Pamlico River and Bay River on the other, and Pamlico Sound at the end of it. There is nowhere in this county that is far from water.
That single fact drives most of the tree work here. Wind arrives off open water with nothing to slow it. Ground stays wet long after the rain stops. And a great many properties are waterfront, which changes how a tree comes down and what has to be protected while it does.
We are not visiting. Our yard is on Old Bay River Road in Grantsboro, in the middle of it.
What waterfront actually changes
Wind from directions it does not get inland
A tree that grew sheltered on three sides is fine until the one storm that comes from the fourth. Waterfront trees also carry more sail than they look like they do, because the canopy has grown wide in the open light.
Soft ground, and heavy machines
Ground near the water gives. That is why we run tracked spider lifts rather than only bucket trucks, and why we lay mats across a lawn before anything heavy crosses it. A rutted yard is a job done badly, not an unavoidable cost.
Nowhere to drop it
Between a bulkhead, a dock, a boat lift and the house, waterfront lots rarely have a safe fall zone. That makes it a rigging job: pieces lowered on ropes in a planned order rather than anything felled whole.
Saturated roots are the real killer
Officials warned during Florence that saturated ground would start toppling large trees, and that is exactly the mechanism here. If one has already come down, here is how insurance usually treats it. When the soil around a root plate turns soft, a tree that stood through decades of storms will lean and then go over.
Towns we cover in Pamlico County
Small towns, long roads, and not many crews out this way. Being twenty minutes from most of it is the whole advantage.

Home. The crossroads of the county and our shortest drive. More on Grantsboro.

Neuse River bluff, the ferry, and a lot of exposed waterfront canopy.

Permits out here
Most of Pamlico County is unincorporated or in very small towns, so there is generally nothing like the historic district permit system New Bern runs, where a removal needs a permit and a Certificate of Appropriateness both. For most properties here, taking a tree out of your own yard is your decision.
Three things still worth checking before you cut: whether your town has its own rules, whether the tree sits near a right of way or in a mapped flood zone, and whether a homeowners association covers your neighborhood. And if the tree is anywhere near a power line, that is a call to your electric provider, not to us. We do not work on energized lines.
What we do across the county
Tree removal
Waterfront removals, hazard trees and anything too close to the house.
Storm damage cleanup
Trees on roofs, drives blocked, and limbs hung up after a blow off the water.
Trimming and reduction
Taking weight and sail out of exposed waterfront canopies before the season.
Stump grinding
Ground below grade and tidied so the yard can be put straight back.
Cabling and bracing
Keeping a good waterfront tree standing rather than removing it.
Brush and debris removal
Limbs and brush chipped at the truck and hauled off, not left in a pile.
