Stump Grinding & Removal in New Bern & Eastern NC
Ground out below grade, the hole backfilled, and the yard left so you can turf or plant straight over it. Worth quoting at the same time as the removal rather than as a second job.
Measure the stump across the widest point and tell us when you call. That is most of what we need to price it.
Grinding and removal are not the same thing
This is the part worth understanding before you pay for either, because the words get used interchangeably and they are two different jobs at two very different prices.
Grinding
A cutting wheel chews the stump down into chips, below ground level. The visible stump goes, the major roots are cut back near the trunk, and the rest of the root system stays in the ground and rots away over the following years. This is what almost everybody actually wants.
Full extraction
Digging the stump and root plate out whole with machinery. It leaves a large hole, tears up a lot of ground, and is usually only worth it if you are building on the spot or the roots are in something they have to come out of.
If somebody has quoted you for stump removal, ask which one they mean. It is the most common reason two quotes look nothing alike.
How deep, and what it looks like afterwards
How far down we go depends on what you want to do with the ground afterwards, and it is worth saying at estimate time rather than after:
- Grass over the top. A few inches below grade is enough to get soil and turf established.
- Planting something new nearby. Deeper, and worth clearing more of the surface roots, because a new tree will not thrive sitting in the old one's root mass.
- Building, a drive, a fence line or a patio. Deeper again, and this is the case where full extraction sometimes makes more sense. Tell us what is going in and we will say which you need.
Grinding does not remove every root. The lateral roots running out under the lawn stay where they are and break down over the next several years. For a lawn that is fine. For a foundation or a new tree in the same hole, it matters.
The grindings, and what happens to them
A ground stump produces a surprising amount of material. A big one can leave a mound of chips and soil noticeably larger than the stump looked, because it comes out aerated. People are regularly caught out by this, so decide up front which you want:
Backfill the hole
The usual choice. The chips go back in and settle over a few months, so expect to top it up with soil later.
Spread as mulch
Fine on beds and paths. Not ideal right against a house or where you are about to plant, since fresh chips tie up nitrogen as they break down.
Hauled away
Costs more because it is another load, but leaves the tidiest finish. Say so when you book rather than on the day.
Whichever you choose, the area gets raked down before we leave. If you want topsoil and seed over it, we can do that too.
What it costs
Stumps are priced mostly on diameter and access. Measure across the widest point at ground level, including the flare where it spreads out at the base, because that flare is what actually gets ground and it is often much wider than the trunk was.
- Diameter. The main driver. A sixteen inch stump is a quick job. A four foot oak flare is a different afternoon.
- Access. The machine has to reach it. Gate widths, steps, slopes and soft ground all matter, so mention them when you call.
- How many. Several stumps are worth quoting together rather than one at a time, since it is one visit and one set-up.
- What is in the ground. Gravel, old fencing, concrete and buried wire wreck cutter teeth. If you know something is down there, tell us.
- Depth, and the grindings. Deeper for a build, and hauling the material away, both add to it.
Get it priced properly
Free, written and itemised, and it will say clearly how deep, what happens to the grindings, and whether the hole gets backfilled. Several stumps at once are worth quoting together.
Reasons not to just leave it
Plenty of people live with a stump for years, and for a stump out in a field that is a perfectly reasonable decision. In a yard it tends to catch up with you:
It is a mower and ankle hazard
Especially once the grass grows over it and it stops being obvious where it is.
It brings insects in
A decaying stump is exactly what termites and carpenter ants are looking for, and you would rather they found it a long way from the house than next to it.
Some species sprout back
Sweetgum, poplar and a few others will throw suckers from the remaining roots for years. Grinding out the stump and flare is what stops that cycle.
It is in the way
You cannot plant there, fence through it, extend a patio over it or run a mower across it, and it will sit there long after you have forgotten which tree it was.
If the tree is still standing, the stump is worth quoting at the same time as the removal. It is the single most common thing left out of a removal quote, and it is easier to plan as one job than to come back for. More on that on our tree removal page.
