Tree Removal in New Bern & Eastern NC

Hazard trees, trees over houses, and removals in yards there is no easy way into. You will know what it costs and why before anybody starts cutting.

Jon looks at the tree himself. No charge, no pressure, and you get it in writing.

What does it cost to have a tree removed?

This is what everybody wants to know first, and anybody who gives you a number over the phone without seeing the tree is guessing. Two pines the same height on the same street can differ by several times in price, and it is almost never about the tree itself. It is about what is underneath it and how we get to it.

Here is what actually moves the number, so you can look at your own tree and know roughly which end of the range you are at:

What is underneath it

A pine in an open field can be felled in one piece in minutes. The same pine over a roof, a fence, a pool or a septic field has to come down in sections on ropes, which can take a crew most of a day. This is the single biggest factor, every time.

Whether we can get equipment to it

A back garden behind a locked gate with a four foot opening is a different job from a front yard we can back a truck onto. Good access lowers the price. It is worth mentioning gate widths when you call.

Size, and species

Height matters less than spread and weight. A wide live oak carries far more wood than a taller, narrower pine, and hardwood is heavier to handle and to haul. Trunk diameter tells us more than height does.

Condition

A dead or rotten tree costs more, not less. Sound wood can be climbed and rigged. A hollow trunk or a dead top cannot be trusted to hold anybody, so it has to come down from a lift or a crane instead, which is slower and needs more machine.

What happens to the debris, and the stump

Chipping and hauling everything away costs more than leaving logs stacked for firewood. Stump grinding is normally quoted separately, so check whether a quote you are comparing includes it. If a storm brought the tree down, insurance may cover the removal. Plenty do not, and that is where two estimates stop being comparable.

How a removal actually goes

Working from the lift rather than dropping the tree whole. Most removals near a house are done this way.
  1. 1. We look at it before anybody quotes

Which way it leans, where the weight sits, what is under it, how the ground is, where the lines run, and how we get in. That walk is what makes the price real instead of a guess.

  2. 2. Utilities first, if lines are involved

If the tree is in contact with a service line, that is a call to your electric provider before anything else happens. We do not work on energized lines and nobody else should offer to.

  3. 3. Protection goes down before the machines go on

Mats across the lawn, plywood over anything vulnerable, and a plan for where each piece lands.

  4. 4. The tree comes apart from the top down

Limbs first, then the stem in sections. Anything over the house is roped and lowered rather than dropped. The order matters: you take weight off the side nearest the structure first, so the tree never loads toward it.

  5. 5. Chipped, hauled, raked and blown off

The brush goes through the chipper, the wood goes on the truck unless you want it left, and the drive gets blown down before we leave.

  6. 6. The stump, if you want it gone

Ground below grade and cleaned up so you can turf or plant straight over it. More on stump grinding. Say so at estimate time and it goes in the same quote.

Getting the machine in without wrecking the yard

A removal that leaves ruts across the lawn, a cracked drive or a flattened bed is not a finished job, it is a second problem. Our lifts run on rubber tracks and spread their weight through outriggers on pads, and we lay mats before crossing turf. On tight sites the spider lift fits through a garden gate and still reaches ninety feet, which is how we work back gardens that a bucket truck cannot enter at all.

It is slower to set up that way. It is also the difference between a lawn that recovers in a fortnight and one that has to be re-laid.

When it needs a crane

Some trees should not be taken apart piece by piece over the thing you are trying to protect. A dead pine leaning across a roof, or a large hardwood in a space with no fall zone at all, is safer and often quicker lifted out: the crane takes the weight of each section before the cut is finished, so nothing swings and nothing drops.

It costs more per hour and usually less per job, because it turns two days into one. Not every company round here owns one, which is worth knowing when quotes come back at very different numbers.

Does it actually need to come down?

Sometimes no, and we would rather tell you that on the estimate than take the money. A tree that looks frightening is often just carrying dead limbs, or leaning the way it has leaned for thirty years. Deadwooding, a crown reduction to take weight and wind out of it, or a cable to support a weak union will handle the risk and keep the tree.

The ones that genuinely should go are usually these: a trunk that is hollow or soft at the base, a dead top over a structure, a fresh lean with cracked or lifting soil on the opposite side of the root plate, or a tree already touching the house with no way to give it clearance.

If you are not sure which yours is, that is exactly what the free visit is for.

Before you hire anybody, ask these

Not just us. Ask whoever you are considering, and be wary of anyone who gets awkward about it.

Can I see your certificate of insurance?

Ask for it from their insurer or agent, not a photo on a phone. If an uninsured crew is hurt in your yard, that can land on your homeowners policy.

Is the price in writing, and what is in it?

Specifically: is the stump included, is the debris hauled, and who is responsible if something gets broken.

Where are you actually based?

It matters for the boring reason: if something needs putting right afterwards, you want somebody who is still nearby next month. Ours is Old Bay River Road, Grantsboro.

Do you need a permit here?

In New Bern's historic districts, yes, and two documents at that. A company that does not know that is telling you something.
